Sevilla target Marseille’s Pape Gueye

With three days to go until the January transfer window closes, Sevilla are preparing to close one of the deals they have been working on for weeks.

After Jeff Reine Adelaide’s loan deal fell through, the Andalusian outfit are focusing on another option. Pape Gueye is, according to Relevo, the midfielder who has the best chance of joining Jorge Sampaoli’s side this month.

Gueye has lost prominence at Marseille this season, making 18 appearances in the league, Champions League and cup. The 24-year-old is 1.89m tall, is left-footed, and has French and Senegalese nationality.

Gueye arrived at Marseille on a free transfer from Le Havre and his contract at the French club expires in 2024. Sampaoli worked with him at the Ligue 1 side and his relationship with the Argentinian coach could play in Sevilla’s favour as he knows his working methods and would adapt quickly.

His profile is different to that of Reine-Adelaide – a more defensive profile – but his physical strength would be a plus for Sevilla, who are looking for a reinforcement that offers different qualities in midfield.

Sevilla are in the race with several other Premier League and Bundesliga teams, although that Sampaoli factor is playing in their favour.
