Sevilla in talks with José Luis Mendilibar

Sevilla’s 2-0 league defeat to Getafe on Sunday was a blow for the players and head coach Jorge Sampaoli, who could be sacked today, according to several reports in Spain.

Mundo Deportivo report that the club’s president, José Castro, and sporting director, Monchi, met in Madrid on Monday with their first choice to replace him.

They sat down with José Luis Mendilibar to discuss the role at the Andalusian side. The Basque coach and the aforementioned Sevilla representatives met at the Hyatt Regency Hesperia Hotel in the Spanish capital.

Mendilibar, who has been without a club after his spell at Alavés last season, is familiar with the Sevilla squad, having coached Dmitrovic, Jordán and Bryan Gil during his time at Eibar. Sevilla value that knowledge and also his playing style, which they believe could be the right fit for the current group of players.

The club’s hierarchy are hoping to convince Mendilibar to take over the struggling side. They currently sit in 14th place on 28 points, just two points above the dropzone.
