Sevilla defender Sergio Ramos has become the most prolific defender in the history of the UEFA Champions League. The defender netted a penalty against Lens in the final match of the tournament’s group stage in midweek, meaning he has now scored 17 goals in the competition.
Ramos scored his first goal in the competition when he was 18 years old in 2005 at Sevilla. Fast forward to the present day and the centre-back has now returned to the same club to make even more history.
The 37-year-old tops the list for most goals in the Champions League among defenders, surpassing the record set by Gerard Piqué and Roberto Carlos, who both had 16 goals to their name. It has taken the Spaniard 142 matches to reach this mark and during this period he has represented Real Madrid, PSG and Sevilla. At Los Blancos, he won the competition on four occasions.
Despite Ramos’ record-breaking goal, he was unable to secure the all-important three points for Sevilla. Los Nervionenses suffered a 2-1 defeat to Lens, which meant that they ended the group stage with just two points. The club finished bottom of the group, meaning that won’t play in the Europa League, a tournament they have had great success in recent years.
