Sergiño Dest’s future up in the air – AC Milan and Barcelona undecided on US full-back

Last summer’s transfer deadline day saw Sergiño Dest leave Barcelona to join AC Milan on loan for a breath of fresh air. With a buy option of €20m, according to Marca, the Serie A side could comfortably purchase the full-back should he impress at the Rossoneri.

However, at the halfway mark in the 2022-23 season, Dest is struggling to leave his mark. With 14 games (all competitions) under his belt, of which he has only been in the starting lineup five times as per Transfermarkt, the United States international is clearly far from impressing Milan manager Stefano Pioli. More likely than not, it appears unlikely that the Italian club will want to make use of their buy clause.

At Barcelona, it appears that his parent club won’t make use of him either. Xavi’s change in tactical system has meant that there’s no clear spot for Dest in the Blaugrana squad and new signing Jules Koundé has performed well since joining from Sevilla.
