Real Sociedad: Martín Merquelanz returns to training after two years out

As reported by Marca, Martín Merquelanz has returned to Real Sociedad training for the first time in over two years, with the player appearing to have finally put his knee problems behind him.

The 28-year-old got injured back in September 2021 and since then has had to undergo surgery on several occasions. After each treatment, there has been a long recovery period, however, the player is now responding well and a return to action looks possible.

Merquelanz was operated on for the first time in January 2018, due to the rupture of the cruciate ligament of his left knee. On the day of his return from injury, which was also his debut with the first team, he suffered the same injury but this time it was in his right knee.

When he returned, La Real loaned him to Mirandés where he had an outstanding campaign with 15 goals and 10 assists to his name. He then returned to his parent club, but after receiving limited minutes he left again on loan, but this time to Rayo Vallecano.

Merquelanz was faced with more injury troubles just four games into his loan spell. To fix the persistent issues in his left knee, the striker has had surgery on multiple occasions.

The most recent procedure was in June of this year, which seems to have solved the issue. After more than two years of rehabilitation, he has been able to once again train with his Real Sociedad team-mates.
