Real Sociedad in talks over new Mikel Merino deal

Real Sociedad have begun talks to extend the contract of midfielder Mikel Merino, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The intention is to use the agreement as a driving force for other contract extensions for key players, such as winger Mikel Oyarzabal.

At 26, Merino is at the peak of his powers, and his current deal at the club expires in the summer of 2025.

There has been talk of interest from Premier League clubs, and although Unai Emery’s Aston Villa have enquired about Merino, the player from Pamplona has no intention of leaving the La Liga club.

Imanol Alguacil, head coach of the Basque outfit, hopes fellow creator David Silva signs a new deal at the Reale Arena.

The former Manchester City player’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season and Alguacil expressed his desire that Silva extends his stay in San Sebastián.

“David is tremendous, I will never tire of repeating that he is extremely important to me, for the team and for the club. I wouldn’t have any doubts about renewing him, if he wants to. He’s ready to play for the team, we are lucky to have him with us.”
