Real Sociedad and Athletic Club have told the Spanish FA that they want their all-Basque Copa del Rey final to be played with fans present.
Both club presidents have demonstrated their desire to postpone the final until there is a date scheduled for when fans of the clubs can attend, even if the delay means there’s no Europa League place for the winners.
Athletic Club president Aitor Elizegi recently said he would rather lose the Copa del Rey final against Basque rivals Real Sociedad with fans present than win it without fans.
“People have asked the question twice this week – I’ve no doubts about it: win the Copa del Rey final without fans or lose it with fans? If we lost it with fans present it would mean that you’re all there together and we’ve beaten this battle that we’re currently faced with.“
