“Real Madrid won’t let me” – Rodrygo on heated clash with Lionel Messi

Real Madrid star Rodrygo has been questioned over his high-profile recent spat with Lionel Messi.

The altercation in question came last week, during a World Cup qualifying showdown between Brazil and Argentina.

Amid a tense atmosphere at the Maracanã, the visitors’ stars, led by captain Lionel Messi, opted to depart the field of play ahead of kick-off.

This came owing to the travelling Argentine contingent in the stands being brutally beaten by the local Rio police force.

The world champions eventually returned, but the drama did not come to a close there.

As Messi made his way back onto the pitch, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner came face-to-face with the aforementioned Rodrygo.

A heated exchange followed, with media reports having pointed towards the latter labelling Messi and his teammates ‘cowards’.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday evening, Rodrygo was therefore asked for his take on the incident, and whether he could provide more context as to what sparked the clash between him and football’s greatest player.

The 22-year-old, however, fresh off finding the net yet again en route to Real Madrid’s Champions League downing of Napoli, opted to keep his cards close to his chest.

“I can’t talk about it. Real Madrid won’t let me,” he responded, accompanied by a wry smile.
