Real Madrid to skip The Best Awards ceremony

Real Madrid players are set to skip The Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony to be held in Paris on Monday night, as per Mario Cortegana for The Athletic.

Despite a phenomenal 2021/22 season where they won La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, Real Madrid stalwarts Karim Benzema and Thibaut Courtois are likely to miss out on the big individual honours. As such, Los Blancos have put all their attention to the El Clásico Copa del Rey semi-final in mid-week, and do not want the distraction of an awards ceremony.

Argentina’s World Cup triumph will reportedly propel Lionel Messi and Emiliano Martínez to The Best FIFA Men’s Player prize and The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper award, respectively.

However, Cortegana reports that Benzema, Courtois and Luka Modrić will feature in the FIFPro World XI.

As per Cortegana, Real Madrid are disappointed at not only not being able to win a major honour, but also at the non-nomination of Vinícius Jr. in the list for the World XI. However, Real Madrid director of institutional relations, Emilio Butragueño, and club ambassador Roberto Carlos, are set to attend to avoid a complete boycott by the European champions.
