Real Madrid star sends contract message to board with display vs Barcelona

An oft-forgotten member of the defensive ranks at Real Madrid sent an indirect message to the club’s board, by way of his performance against Barcelona this evening.

The player in question? Lucas Vázquez.

The latest edition of El Clásico, of course, played to completion a short time ago.

A pulsating affair, featuring five goals, frequent drama and the kind of intensity which only comes by way of arch rivals going toe-to-toe, ultimately culminated in Real Madrid emerging on the right side of the result.

Twice clawing their way back from a goal down, Carlo Ancelotti’s troops showcased their fighting spirit for the 2nd time in the space of mere days, on their way to a 3-2 triumph.

And, en route to as much, something of a surprise hero emerged in Real’s ranks…

Afforded a rare chance to impress from the off in place of first-choice right-back Dani Carvajal, Lucas Vázquez enjoyed nothing short of a remarkable display on the right of Los Blancos’ backline.

The experienced Spaniard won the penalty for his side’s first equaliser through a jinking run, netted the 2nd leveller courtesy of a fine back post finish, and then laid on what proved to be the winner for Jude Bellingham.

After proving his worth just days ago in slotting home a cool spot-kick in his side’s penalty shootout downing of Manchester City in the Champions League, Vázquez, again, provided a reminder on Sunday of just how important he remains in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.

As things stand, the 32-year-old is in line to depart Spain’s capital this summer, as a free agent.

Safe to say, tonight, however, Vázquez let his feet do the talking, in reiterating to the Real Madrid brass exactly why they should be doing everything in their power to tie him down to fresh terms.
