A leading member of the first-team ranks at La Liga giants Real Madrid has called into serious question the game plan made use of by his side in their meeting with Arsenal this evening.
Real Madrid, of course, are fresh off an outing to forget on the continent.
After being put to the sword by three goals to nil by Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-final opener between the sides last week, Los Blancos were aware that they required another historic comeback to keep hopes of maintaining their European crown alive.
When all was said and done on another hugely underwhelming night for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, however, they were condemned to defeat once more.
As much gave rise to a 5-1 aggregate loss, and a frankly embarrassing exit from the Champions League.
And one individual of the opinion that Real Madrid did not put themselves in the best possible position to turn things around against Arsenal at the Santiago Bernabéu is Thibaut Courtois.
Speaking to the media on the back of the full-time whistle on Wednesday, goalkeeper Courtois called into question the tactical approach put into action by Carlo Ancelotti and his coaching staff, explaining:
“Instead of putting in a lot of crosses, maybe we needed to play some team football… We put in a lot of crosses, but there’s no Joselu.”
The Belgian continued:
“We need to start playing as a team, not as individuals. We need to start being honest with ourselves.”
