Real Madrid injury update: Éder Militao to return in March

An update on the injury and fitness status of the Real Madrid squad has been provided today.

According to Relevo, Éder Militao is expected to make his official return from injury in March. The Brazilian will need several weeks of full training before making his return to competitive action, with the club aiming for him to return to action in time for the hypothetical UEFA Champions League quarter-final matches. If Madrid proceed to the next round, they will face their quarter-final opponents in the first leg on either April 9, or April 10 with the second leg a week later.

The defender ruptured the cruciate ligament in his left knee on the first match day of La Liga. Carlo Ancelotti lost his first choice centre back just 49 minutes into the new league campaign and this was a massive blow as in the same week the Italian coach also lost Thibaut Courtois to the same injury. The 26-year-old left San Mamés in tears, with the club announcing the extent of his injury just hours later.

Five days after picking up the injury, Militao was successfully operated on and began his long recovery. However, this was a huge loss for Los Blancos as the Brazil international was set to play a key role this season due to his reliability with his absence leaving a void that the club are still trying to fill.

A few weeks after the successful procedure, the player began his recovery in the gym and just two months after undergoing surgery he is now moving without crutches. The first scans after his injury showed that he would be out for around six to seven months and due to the severity of the injury Militao hasn’t taken any risks and consequently hasn’t had any setbacks during his recovery.

Since the new year, the physical centre-back has returned to training on the Valdebebas pitch as he looks to intensify the speed of his recovery. This is the first major injury of his career and therefore the club are asking him to patient, even though they want him to return to the side as soon as possible.
