The Spanish national team have on Wednesday announced a fresh change to the country’s squad for their remaining Nations League fixtures over the days ahead.
The change in question comes at the back, where Alejandro Grimaldo has been forced to drop out of Luis de la Fuente’s setup owing to a fitness complaint.
Left-back Grimaldo was an unused substitute in Spain’s victories over both England and Croatia over the last week, with De La Fuente and his staff having instead opted for Marc Cucurella.
The Atlético Madrid summer signing was expected to be afforded at least some minutes in La Roja’s remaining two fixtures during the break, with rotation incoming in the world champions’ XI.
But as alluded to above, for Grimaldo at least, this will not prove to be the case…
As per a statement across Spain’s social media platforms on Wednesday, the 31-year-old has picked up a thigh problem, therefore replaced by Real Betis’ Fran García in the country’s camp:
‘Fran García, a player for Real Betis Balompié, replaces Alejandro Grimaldo in the Spain squad, which is currently playing in the UEFA Nations League and still has two matches remaining in this window.
‘The Atlético de Madrid international defender felt some discomfort in his left thigh during the warm-up before the Spain – Croatia match at the Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium and, after the tests carried out, he is leaving the national team camp as a precaution, thus avoiding any added risk and preserving the player’s health.’
