Raphaël Varane considering a return to Spain: Is a controversial move on the cards?

Raphaël Varane is leaving Manchester United at the end of the season, this much has already been confirmed by the player himself. This opens up a variety of options for the French centre-back concerning where the next stage of his career will take him.

It would seem that the two main choices for the 31-year-old defender are either a return to Lens, with whom he started his career, or a return to Spain.

As per OKDiario, as cited by Mundo Deportivo, Varane’s move to Spain could prove controversial if it were to come to fruition, as it would involve a move to Atlético Madrid, the city rivals of his former club Real Madrid.

Sources indicate that Varane has fond memories of his time living in Madrid, and would be open to a return to the Spanish capital. With Stefan Savić leaving the Metropolitano, the door could be opened to this unlikely transfer.

Currently, it seems as though Varane himself is more open to the idea of a return to France, however, stranger things have happened in football, and it would be interesting to see the reaction of the Real Madrid faithful if such a move were to occur.
