Real Madrid overcame a nervy start before taking control of the game and beating Celtic to begin their Champions League title defence.


Thibaut Courtois: 7 – Never really tested by Celtic. Assured in possession when building out from the backup.

Dani Carvajal: 7.5 – Made some good defensive recoveries in the first half. Grew into the game offensively in the second 45, ending with an assist.

Éder Militão: 7.5 – Used his pace and aerial ability to good effect to nullify Celtic’s strikers.

David Alaba: 6.5 – A solid performance, being the typically useful outlet in aiding the defensive build-up play.

Ferland Mendy: 7 – Resolute defensive performance and calm in possession.

Aurélien Tchouaméni: 7 – Another good outing as he adjusts to playing alongside Modrić and Kroos.

Luka Modrić: 9 – Tireless in defensive and offensive transitions. Scored with his trademark outside-the-foot shot.

Toni Kroos: 7.5 – Slow to start but controlled proceedings in the second half.

Fede Valverde: 8.5 – A signature performance from the Uruguayan, using his pace and directness to brilliant use. Assisted the opener with a superb cross.

Karim Benzema: 5 – Went off injured at the half-hour mark with a suspected knee injury.

Vinícius Jr.: 7.5 – Composed finish to convert Valverde’s cross for Real Madrid’s opener. Fourth consecutive game on the scoresheet.


Eden Hazard: 7 – A goal and an assist for the Belgian after replacing Benzema.
