Pitch invasion as Barcelona celebrate title win

At the full-time whistle on Sunday night, as the Barcelona players were celebrating their league title win in the centre of the pitch at the RCDE Stadium, a group of Espanyol fans invaded the pitch.

AS report that security staff at the ground tried to hold the fences bordering the Grada Canito, until fans broke onto the pitch, which saw the Barça players react quickly and run to their dressing room.

Dozens of members of the Mossos d’Esquadra’s Brigada Mòbil got in the way of the supporters to protect the tunnel and at the time of writing, no injuries have been reported.

The situation dragged on for a few minutes, to the point that the Mossos had to use the RCDE Stadium public address system. “This is the police speaking: leave the stadium or force will be used”.

The tension continued, as the dozens of invaders remained on the pitch, with proclamations towards their own club such as “board of directors, resign”.

There was then a second warning over the loudspeaker, before they finally returned to their seats to leave the stadium.

These events will undoubtedly have consequences for Espanyol.
