Photo: Why Barcelona’s fans are fuming during Benfica clash

Supporters of La Liga giants Barcelona have on Wednesday been left nothing short of livid.

This comes owing to the officiating in the club’s meeting with Benfica.

Barcelona are of course currently locked in action on the continent, in a Champions League Round-of-16 showdown with Portuguese heavyweights Benfica.

As things stand, the two sides remain deadlocked, at 0-0.

This, though, does not mean that the matchup has gone by without incident or drama. Far from it…

Inside the opening 25 minutes at the Estádio da Luz, Pau Cubarsí was shown a straight red card, for a last-man challenge outside the visitos’ penalty area.

Whilst Barca could have few complaints with the decision, though, they were soon left infuriated upon Benfica escaping a dismissal of their own.

Late in the first-half in Lisbon, Leandro Barreiro was responsible for a late challenge on Iñigo Martínez, leaving the stopper grounded and in pain.

Despite Barreiro having missed the ball completely before standing studs first on Iñigo’s right leg, the tackle was not deemed to be worthy of a red card.

Images of the incident, which has since caused quite a stir online, can be seen below:
