One Real Madrid star played through illness vs Atlético

A leading member of the midfield ranks at La Liga giants Real Madrid played through a bout of illness in the club’s most recent outing.

That’s according to Marca, who point towards Federico Valverde as the player in question.

Real of course marked their return to action this past Sunday, making the short trip to the Wanda Metropolitano for the season’s first Madrid Derby.

When all was said and done in a fiery affair in the Spanish capital, the spoils were shared between the sides, owing to a 1-1 stalemate.

The aforementioned Valverde, meanwhile, started and saw out the 90 minutes, shining on his way to Man of the Match honours.

And as much, it has since been revealed, came despite the Uruguayan having been struck down by illness in the buildup to the derby.

As per a report from Marca:

‘Not even the virus he caught before the match prevented Valverde from performing at his highest level in the first derby of the season.’
