Official: Spain set to be joint host of 2030 FIFA World Cup

Despite being pretty well-known for a while, FIFA have today officially announced the hosts of the 2030 and 2034 World Cups.

The 2030 edition will see Spain host alongside Portugal and Morocco, with Argentina Uruguay and Paraguay also holding one match each as special ‘Centenary hosts’.

This is a groundbreaking move for the world’s biggest football tournament, as it will be hosted across three continents for the first time ever.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia will controversially host the 2034 edition of the tournament, the second time the tournament will be hosted in the Middle East in a 12-year period.

This edition of the tournament is controversial for many reasons, mainly human rights concerns over workers’ treatment in the event’s preparation.

FIFA rules indicate that any given confederation can’t host the tournament twice in a two-year period, which means that the 2034 edition could only be hosted by countries in Asia or Oceania.

Many believe that the three-continent tournament in 2030 was deliberately designed to make it easier for Saudi Arabia to become hosts in 2034.

Regardless of what you believe, World Cup football will be played in Spain in just over five years’ time, for the first time since 1982.
