Karim Benzema has been named the winner of the 2022 Ballon d’Or. In a remarkable 2021-22 campaign, Benzema scored 44 goals for Real Madrid, including 27 in La Liga, where he was the top scorer. As well as his 27 goals, he registered 12 assists in La Liga last season. The Frenchman netted 15 times in the Champions League and also stuck twice in the Spanish Super Cup.
Madrid’s No.9 was also clinical at international level, scoring six goals for the France national team. Two of his memorable nights in Europe last season included hat-tricks. Benzema helped Carlo Ancelotti’s Madrid side complete a remarkable comeback against PSG in the last 16 of the 2021-22 Champions League with a hat-trick.
Against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of the quarter-final, he scored three more to set Madrid up for the semi-finals of the competition. Benzema, 34, was dominant in a season that saw Madrid lift both the La Liga title and the Champions League. Benzema is the fifth Frenchman to win the Ballon d’Or.
