Official | Atlético Madrid complete the signing of Matt Doherty from Tottenham

Atlético Madrid have completed the signing of Matt Doherty from Tottenham on a six-month deal.

Doherty arrives on a free transfer after terminating his contract with Spurs and signs with Los Colchoneros until the end of the season.

Atlético believe that Doherty’s move will be key in providing competition and cover for Nahuel Molina at right-back.

The Ireland international played 878 minutes in 16 games for Spurs this season, scoring one goal.

Although his natural position is right-back, he can also play further forward as a wing-back. Doherty is represented by agent Jorge Mendes.

The 31-year-old previously played for Wolves and then signed for Tottenham in 2020, after Spurs paid €16.8m for his signature.

Doherty will be officially presented by Atlético on Wednesday 1 February at the Cívitas Metropolitano.

Tottenham added: “We have mutually agreed to the termination of Matt Doherty’s contract to enable him to join another club.

“Signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers in August, 2020, the Republic of Ireland international made 71 appearances for us in all competitions, scoring three goals.

“We should like to thank Matt for his service and wish him well for the future.”
