Athletic Club have sacked head coach Gaizka Garitano, the LaLiga club confirmed on Sunday.
Despite Athletic’s 1-0 home win over Elche on Sunday, Garitano was relieved of his duties after just over two years in charge of the San Mamés side.
Garitano’s contract was due to run until June 2021. Athletic currently sit in ninth place in LaLiga. The former reserve team coach led The Lions to last season’s Copa del Rey final, which has yet to be played, owing to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Athletic Club would like to thank Gaizka and his staff for the effort and dedication they have shown since taking over the first team when it was in a delicate sporting situation. The Club would like to wish them all the best in the future,” a statement from the club read.
