No Barcelona return for Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi will continue to wear the PSG shirt for at least one more season. Since leaving Barcelona, Messi has always been linked with a return to Camp Nou.

According to Relevo, the Argentinian is still disappointed with Barcelona president Joan Laporta.

A week ago in Doha there was a key meeting between Messi’s father, Jorge Messi, and PSG president Nasser Al Khelaifi. It was closed with a handshake, a verbal agreement to play for one more season.

Talks between the two sides began in November. Messi is in favour of signing on a year-by-year basis, unlike the Ligue 1 club, who would like to tie him down to a longer agreement. In the summer of 2024, Messi will be able to decide whether to cut his contract short.

Laporta has previously said that Messi would wear the Barcelona shirt again and finish his career at Camp Nou. Messi felt he was being used as an electoral weapon. A year and a half after his emotional departure, the relationship between Messi and Laporta is still broken.

Messi has never been close to returning to Barça because there was never an offer. The first step could have been a call from Laporta but that never came, and Messi is still hurt about the way he had to leave the club he loved.

After winning the World Cup, the 35-year-old has a new objective: to lift another Champions League. In sporting terms, the PSG project convinces him more than the Barça one.
