Manuel Pellegrini: “It was a six-point win against a direct rival.”

Yesterday evening Real Betis defeated Villarreal 1-0 at the Estadio Benito Villamarín.

In his post-match interview that appeared on AS, Manuel Pellegrini reviewed the game:

“We started very well with a couple of goal-scoring chances. It was a balanced match. We took the risk of stretching the game and we were very good. We forced them to get the ball out wide, we pressed well in the opposition half with all the players involved in winning the ball back against an opponent with a Champions League budget.

“I’m very pleased to play like that against this level of opposition. We wanted to start with maximum intensity to open the scoring,” he added.

The Chilean coach also discussed the importance of the victory:

“It was an important win, we talked about it, it was six points. We have fought with Villarreal and Real Sociedad for the Europa League positions and it leaves us above them. Each year it gets more difficult as our rivals get stronger.”
