Manuel Pellegrini: “It is undeniable that Karim Benzema deserves the award.”

Last night Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema won the Ballon d’Or for the first time in his career.

In an interview that appeared on Marca, Real Betis coach Manuel Pellegrini told journalists that France Football made the right decision to award the prize to the Frenchman:

“It is undeniable that Karim Benzema deserves the award. He is a complete player, not only a scorer, but he is a creator as well.”

“I was lucky to arrive at Real Madrid in the same year as he did. Staying at Real Madrid for ten years as a key player is not easy,” he added.

The Chilean was appointed as Los Blancos’ head coach in 2009. However, he was dismissed at the end of the 2009-10 season as Real Madrid failed to win any silverware and he had differing views with club president Florentino Pérez on the direction the club should take in terms of player recruitment.
