Sergio Ramos equalled Gianluigi Buffon’s European caps record after making his 176th appearance for Spain against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on Wednesday night.
Head coach Luis Enrique spoke after the 1-1 draw about the national team captain and his special achievement.
“Sergio is unique. He is on a different level. The appearance record is only within the reach of those who are very gifted. He has a ceiling, unfortunately for me as a coach.
Ramos was brought on six minutes from the end at the Johan Cruyff Arena and the Real Madrid defender can overtake legendary keeper Buffon as Europe’s most-capped international footballer should he play against Switzerland on Saturday.
