Luis Enrique: “I’m taking the 25 players I think are the best for these games.”

Luis Enrique announced his Spain squad for the national team’s upcoming Nations League games against Switzerland and Portugal.

In his press conference that appeared on Marca, he discussed the players who received their first ever call-up to the senior side:

“We know Nico [Williams] from the youth teams and he is a pure winger. I know Borja [Iglesias] very well. He trained with me at Celta. He’s been doing well for a long time and he has the ability to link up with others. He has a goal in him and I even like his attitude, always smiling on the pitch.”

Luis Enrique acknowledged that people will always complain about who should be included:

“I’m going to take the ones I consider the best. Meritocracy? That’s why two new players are coming. Other coaches are also asked about those who don’t come. It’s very difficult to please everyone. I understand that there are fans of a team who complain, I also did it when I was a kid. I’m taking the 25 players I think are the best for these games.”

Spain’s coach also revealed how close this squad is to the one he will take to the World Cup:

“The door to the national team is not closed for any active Spanish player. Percentage? What percentage do you want to hear? Well, 80.”

Luis Enrique also indicated that the door is not closed for Iago Aspas and Sergio Ramos:

“These players have been in the national team. They can come back to the national team, there is no doubt about it.”
