Long-time Barcelona star to hold Camp Nou farewell ceremony this week

A long-time member of the first-team setup at La Liga giants Barcelona will this week be afforded what will no doubt be an emotional farewell ceremony.

The player in question? Sergi Roberto.

The subject of versatile midfielder Roberto’s future has of course proven a central talking point in Catalunya’s capital across the summer to date.

This comes following the expiration of the 32-year-old’s previous contract terms.

Roberto had for his part held out hope of reaching an agreement on a short-term renewal with the Barcelona brass, to take him into a 15th season in the Blaugrana’s first-team ranks.

As much, however, will not prove to be the case.

As confirmed by a number of sources across the Spanish media on Sunday, Roberto has been informed that he will not have a place in Hansi Flick’s squad for the campaign ahead.

As per a report from Mundo Deportivo, a farewell ceremony has in turn been organised at the Camp Nou, for a player who just last season acted as Barcelona’s captain.

Turning attentions towards the road ahead for Roberto, he is not at all short on suitors, albeit with the Spaniard’s ‘dream’ destination remaining the Premier League.
