Liverpool were on the market in January for a defender to bolster their backline after a series of injuries to key centre-backs.
The Athletic report that the Premier League club considered signing Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti but the Frenchman was reluctant to leave Catalonia.
Umtiti, 27, has himself had no luck, with several long-term injuries ruling him out for long periods at Barcelona. He has, however, made several recent starts at the heart of the team’s defence, including against Granada in their 5-3 Copa del Rey victory midweek.
