Liverpool-Atlético Madrid match linked to 41 COVID-19 deaths, study claims

A study into data from the UK’s National Health Service has claimed that the Champions League fixture between Liverpool and Atlético Madrid at Anfield on March 11 is linked to more than 41 additional deaths from COVID-19, according to ESPN.

According to data in the Edge Health report, which was published in The Sunday Times, Spain had approximately 640,000 positive cases on the day of the match (March 11), while the UK had 100,000.

Liverpool were eliminated from this season’s Champions League when they suffered a home defeat to Atlético after extra-time to lose the tie 3-2 on aggregate – which was the last major game to be played in England before football came to a halt, as a result of the pandemic.
