La Liga 2 final day: Who’s going up and who still has work to do?

The final day in the second tier of Spanish football has been a manic one. Two teams were fighting for the league title, and three more were battling for the final spot in the playoffs.

Leganés came out of the day with the league title after a 2-0 win against Elche, with goals from Miguel de la Fuente and Juan Cruz securing a first-ever second-division title and their third trophy ever.

Real Valladolid had already secured automatic promotion, so a 2-1 loss away at Tenerife did them no harm. They will be playing in the top flight next year.

Eibar and Espanyol had already secured places in the playoffs, but three teams contested the final two spots.

Sporting Gijon secured their spot with a 5th place finish after a 1-0 away win against Eldense, while Real Oviedo, who occupied 6th, had a nervy finish as they failed to beat Eibar away from home.

They had nothing to worry about, however, as Racing Santander failed to beat Villarreal B away from home, missing out on their opportunity in the playoffs.

So, in the playoff semi-finals, Real Oviedo will face Eibar in a two-legged tie, whilst Sporting Gijon will face Espanyol.

Dermot Corrigan of The Athletic shared a beautiful photo of the title celebrations at Leganés, which can be seen below:
