Key Barcelona star may already have played his final game for the club

A headline member of the midfield ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona may not take to the pitch in the club’s colours again.

That’s if the latest word stemming from the media is anything to go by.

The player in question comes in the form of Frenkie de Jong.

Dutch international De Jong, of course, set alarm bells ringing across Catalunya’s capital once more on Sunday, in being stretchered out of Barcelona’s La Liga showdown with Real Madrid.

Ensuing medical tests carried out on Monday confirmed an ankle sprain for the 26-year-old, who has been ruled out for the remainder of the season as a result.

And, according to Diario AS, Sunday’s Clásico may well prove to be the final chapter in De Jong’s Blaugrana career.

This comes with the powers that be at the club continuing to take into serious consideration his sale come the summer:

‘His continuity is up in the air, and even more so when taking into account the financial needs of the club and the good reputation that the Dutch international has in the Premier League.’

It is added that De Jong’s current contract terms also make him a leading candidate to be shifted with a view to next season.

The former Ajax man is tied to an ‘ascending’ deal, which means that his wages are due to take another jump in the 2024/25 campaign.

With these terms set to expire in the summer of 2026, ‘the Blaugrana leaders consider that it is a good time’ to sell.

The message relayed to De Jong and his entourage is therefore a clear one – sign a new contract on a reduced salary, or risk being shipped out in the summer.
