Junior Firpo reveals why he ‘stopped trying’ under Ronald Koeman at Barcelona

Former Barcelona defender Junior Firpo has provided an insight into the remarkable extent to which his relationship with Ronald Koeman deteriorated, during the pair’s shared time in Catalunya.

Firpo, for his part, spent two years lining out in Barcelona’s colours, from 2019 to 2021.

Despite arriving amid high expectations on the back of an impressive spell with Real Betis, however, the left-back, for the most part, flattered to deceive during his time at Camp Nou.

Such woes, though, would certainly not have been helped by a falling out with boss Ronald Koeman.

Firpo’s second season as a Barca player saw him manage a paltry three La Liga starts, after being deemed not up to scratch by incoming boss Koeman.

Speaking during an interview with Sport this week, the Spaniard in turn made use of the opportunity to take aim at his ex-manager.

In a jibe that ultimately culminated in him all but throwing in the towel in Catalunya, Firpo has revealed that Koeman accused him of ‘contaminating’ the Blaugrana’s dressing room:

“I asked Koeman about my lack of minutes,” he began. “And he gave me an answer in which he was not being honest: he told me that I was contaminating the group; so, I stopped trying.”
