Julen Lopetegui’s future at Sevilla up in the air

There are currently questions about whether Julen Lopetegui should remain in charge of Sevilla, just when the international break would be an ideal time to make a change.

After the break, the Andalusian club have some tough tests on the pitch. But off the pitch, the ball is in the club’s court, although opinions currently differ in the board room, according to Marca.

On one side are the directors, who would prefer to fire the Basque coach, while sporting director Monchi, along with a large part of the staff, are in favour of Lopetegui staying.

The sporting director bought time after defeats to Barcelona and Man City, where he even met with the club’s captains.

Monchi did not want to leave his manager in the lurch, someone he backed in the summer window, and he is aware of the difficulties he is going through this season.

The recent victory over Espanyol was badly needed, but Sevilla followed it up with a poor 0-0 draw away to Copenhagen in the Champions League.

The draw at Villarreal on Sunday may have bought him some more time in the dugout. The club’s board is not happy with the league position (15th) but Monchi is remaining firm.

Over the coming days, the club will decide which direction Sevilla will take. Monchi is an employee, but his decision still counts.
