Real Madrid head coach José Mourinho was amongst the spectators on Saturday, as a new record was set at Los Blancos’ famed home ground.
This came by way of the attendance figures at the U20 Intercontinental Cup meeting between Real and the Santiago Wanderers.
As per a report from Diario AS:
‘The match between Real Madrid and Santiago Wanderers, corresponding to the Under-20 Intercontinental Cup, drew
52,117 spectators to the stands, the highest attendance ever recorded for a youth match.’
The new benchmark bested that previously set by fans of Barcelona and Flamengo at the Maracanã, back in 2015. That fixture drew 45,656 spectators.
When all was said and done in Spain’s capital on Saturday, it was the hosts who emerged on the right side of the result, thanking goals on the part of Daniel Yáñez, Fran Santamaría and Roberto Martín for a 3-1 triumph.
In the process, Real Madrid became the first Spanish club to ever win the U20 Intercontinental Cup.
