Jorge Sampaoli’s spell at Sevilla set to come to an end

After a dreadful start to the season in which Sevilla have dropped near the relegation zone, October saw Jorge Sampaoli brought in to change the team’s fortunes. However, he has not succeeded in doing so, and after Sunday’s 2-0 defeat against Getafe, the Argentine coach’s job is in danger.

Sampaoli has won only a single away game since his arrival, with five defeats and three draws illustrating his team’s impotency away from the Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.

The important recent wins at home, against Fenerbahçe and PSV in Europa League alongside a victory against bottom-of-the-table rivals Almería, provide some relief for Los Nervionenses, but they nevertheless sit only two points from the relegation zone.

Sampaoli insists on maintaining a style of football that isn’t producing results. He asks his team to play out from the back, but players constantly make mistakes when faced with a high press, such as the one which led to Getafe’s opener. Sampaoli has stated that the issue is that of a mental block and not a tactical problem.

He is now set to lose his job as the club hold talks with Basque coach José Luis Mendilibar, as reported by Spanish outlet Relevo.
