Jorge Sampaoli set to become new Sevilla head coach

Jorge Sampaoli will arrive in Sevilla today ahead of officially becoming the club’s new head coach, according to Relevo.

The Argentinian, who managed Sevilla during the 2016-17 season, will replace Julen Lopetegui, who was sacked on Wednesday night. Lopetegui’s last game in charge of the club came in the 4-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Sampaoli is expected to lead training this evening. Some members of the Argentine’s coaching staff are already at Sevilla’s training hotel awaiting the arrival of the former Marseille head coach.

The Andalusian side are currently 17th in the La Liga table. Sevilla’s next league game is against Ernesto Valverde’s in-form Athletic Club on Saturday 8 October.

Sampaoli worked with Sevilla during sporting director Monchi’s first spell at the club, and finished fourth with 72 points. His first training schedule with the Sevilla squad has been scheduled for this afternoon at 6.30 pm local time.
