João Félix asks to leave Atlético Madrid

Once again, João Félix is in the news at Atlético Madrid. According to Marca, the player has asked his agent, Jorge Mendes, to find a way out of the Spanish club.

The Portugal international exploded after he was not among the 16 players, the starting eleven and the five changes, who played against Brugge in the Champions League earlier this week.

He is now behind Antoine Griezmann, Ángel Correa, Álvaro Morata and Matheus Cunha for a place in Atlético’s attack. The Portuguese started the season well, but in recent weeks his contribution has been declining.

“I think Joao Félix is the best player there is right now, at least I feel that way. It’s true that we’re having a lot of problems adapting because of injuries, because of COVID, because of the way he and the team understand the game,” said Atlético Madrid CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín in an interview in Sonora.

In recent hours there has been speculation that his departure could be a loan move to Benfica in the January transfer window. The 22-year-old met with Jorge Mendes in a Madrid restaurant on Thursday night to find a way out of his complicated situation.

His release clause is €350m and he has a contract with Los Colchoneros until 2026.
