Joan Laporta on Frenkie de Jong: “We hope the player will do everything he can to stay”

As reported by AS, Joan Laporta tells the media that Frenkie de Jong has to reduce his salary if he wants to stay at Barcelona.

In his latest public appearance in New York, the Barcelona president elaborated on the situation:

“He wants to stay and we want him to stay. That is the most important thing. What is clear is that we have a new wage scale and all the players have to fit into it. We are trying to make these players understand the reality of the club. We are faced with a wage bill that has shot up by more than 40 per cent.”

“We all have to make an effort. We are going to do everything we can to keep him and we hope the player will do everything he can in order to stay.”

While from Laporta’s words it can be deduced that he wants de Jong to stay, from his tone it appears that no progress has been made to develop a solution.
