Barcelona president Joan Laporta has this weekend dropped something of a hint regarding the club’s ongoing pursuit of Atlético Madrid star Julián Alvarez.
This comes courtesy of the assurance that a transfer, however unlikely, can never be ruled out…
Barcelona have of course spent the majority of the summer to date pushing to bring frontman Alvarez to the Spotify Camp Nou with a view to next season.
Following the departure of Robert Lewandowski, the Argentine has been identified as the ideal replacement in Hansi Flick’s star-studded squad.
Atlético, for their part, have remained nothing short of adamant that their star striker will be going nowhere over the weeks ahead, with Rojiblancos CEO Miguel Angel Gil having just this week insisted:
“My position is clear, the club’s position is clear. We’ve made it known to the player, his representatives, and the president of Barcelona.
“I have absolutely no doubt that Atlético is the best place in the world for Julián, and that Julián is the perfect centre-forward for Atlético Madrid. We want to keep him.”
Safe to say, however, that the board at the Camp Nou have not yet been deterred…
Drawn on the Alvarez situation during an exchange with the media on Sunday, Barcelona president Joan Laporta was not shy in assuring:
“There are many cases where it’s been said that a player won’t go to a team, but then he ended up going… I don’t want to mention examples.”
