Ivan Rakitic has been Sevilla’s standout player in what has so far been a difficult season. The Croat is a fundamental pillar of the midfield and scored a wonderful goal last week in the derby against Real Betis to slightly ease pressure on manager Diego Alonso.
With his contract set to expire at the end of the year, there were fears that they may lose the 35-year-old to Saudi Arabia (who last summer offered him a contract that would earn him three times as much as he currently earns at Sevilla), or to Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami.
However, as reported by AS, Rakitic himself has expressed his desire to stay with the Andalucian club in a recent interview in which he said, “I don’t have any other thought than to continue playing, and there is no better place to do that than at Sevilla. I want to continue here for years to come.”
The club and Rakitic are said to have already begun discussing a contract extension, though his salary will have to be far lower than it is currently.
