‘It will happen’ – Deco provides update on Barcelona star’s contract renewal talks

Barcelona sporting director Deco has on Wednesday provided an insight into the club’s ongoing efforts to tie Pedri down to a new contract.

Midfielder Pedri has of course spent the early months of the new campaign reestablishing himself as one of the first names on the team sheet in Catalunya’s capital.

Looking back to his brilliant best after an injury-played season in 2023/24, the Spanish international has reminded any and all doubters of his unquestionable abilities when firing on all cylinders.

Time and time again, new boss Hansi Flick has made clear that Pedri plays a central role in his Blaugrana plans moving forward.

In turn, the Camp Nou brass have long set about tying the club’s engine room gem down to fresh terms.

Pedri is set to see his current contract expire in the summer of 2026, meaning Barcelona, ideally, would like to have his renewal signed and sealed before the end of the current campaign.

Speaking to the media this week, the subject of negotiations with the former Las Palmas talent was, in turn, put to the aforementioned Deco.

And, during an interview with Mundo Deportivo, the Barca chief made clear his confidence that an agreement will soon be struck between the parties:

”To go for a renewal the first thing you have to know is what the players are looking for, and I think they are looking to win titles, be in a competitive team and, of course, have good contracts. I thought that way and I think we have players who also think that way. I think Pedri’s renewal will happen because I think Pedri wants to make history at the club, he feels comfortable here, he is happy, he wants to win titles, he is back at his best after working hard, understanding that there was work behind him that he had to do after so many years of suffering a lot with many games and injuries. He has understood it and has seen that he had to work in a different way, improve, and he was on time. We will do the renewal, he has this season and another one left. We are focused on winning important things this season, but also on guaranteeing the future of important players and Pedri is one of them.”
