Is Rodrigo Riquelme ready to return to Atlético Madrid?

One of the standout players so far this season is Rodrigo Riquelme of Girona.

On loan from Atlético Madrid, the 22-year-old is making a statement and letting Diego Simeone know that he deserves a first-team spot next season.

In an interview with Mundo Deportivo earlier this month, Riquelme didn’t shy away from the prospect of a new step forward. “I see myself as being ready and I’m covering the necessary bases to be able to be at Atlético Madrid.”

He also recognised he’s not at his best level yet, and he can still get better. “I’m 22 years old and I have a big margin for improvement. I always have my ears open to listen to what people say to me so I can use it on the pitch and develop myself.”

Since the interview, Riquelme has continued his great form and was one of the standout performers in Girona’s 6-2 thrashing of Almería last Friday, registering a goal and an assist.

As reported by Diario AS, the young Spaniard has scored four goals and provided two assists so far in the league this campaign.

With the possible departure of Yannick Carrasco in the summer, there could be a spot for Riquelme in Atlético’s side next season.
