As communicated by Mundo Deportivo, it is still unclear whether Iñigo Martínez will play for Athletic Bilbao next season.
The 31-year-old’s current deal at San Mamés is set to expire in June 2023 and there have been no signs that it would be renewed anytime soon.
When asked about his contractual situation at Athletic Bilbao, Martínez stated he does not want to discuss the topic with journalists:
“I don’t think it’s a question I have to answer now. It’s in the hands of the club and my agent. I’m happy here”.
The centre-back neither confirmed nor denied interest from Barcelona during the summer transfer window when reports emerged that the Blaugrana were keen on signing him. However, if the rumours were false, he would have been expected to deny them and clarify the situation.
Martínez continues to be an important player at Athletic Bilbao and made his return to the starting XI against Elche last weekend.
