İlkay Gündoğan reveals the Barcelona star who helped him the most after arrival

Barcelona star İlkay Gündoğan has this week provided an insight into the teammate who helped him most with his adaption to life in Spain.

Gündoğan, for his part, is of course fresh off a stellar debut campaign in Barcelona’s colours.

After linking up with Xavi’s troops on a free transfer from Manchester City, the German international quickly went on to establish himself as an integral member of the Blaugrana’s midfield ranks.

In fact, many would no doubt argue that, across the length of the campaign, Gündoğan stood as Barca’s most consistent performer.

All told, the 34-year-old racked up a hefty 51 appearances across all competitions, chipping in with five goals and a team-leading 14 assists along the way.

Those of a Blaugrana persuasion will in turn no doubt be interested to hear of Gündoğan providing an insight into the teammate to have played the most important role in his superb start to life with their side.

Speaking during an appearance at the Globe Soccer Awards, at which he was named in the La Liga Team of the Season, the one-time Borussia Dortmund talent pointed to fellow countryman Marc-André ter Stegen as the player in question:

“Ter Stegen was the one who helped me the most. Because I moved to a new club and country and had to adapt. Marc is my partner and has been at Barça for 10 years, so I was able to ask him a lot of questions and I learned a lot from him. I’m happy to have him on the team.”
