‘If a player doesn’t want to move there isn’t much you can do…’ – Barcelona vice president on failed move for Nico Williams

The transfer saga between Barcelona and Athletic Club winger Nico Williams was one which rumbled on all summer following the 22-year-old’s excellent performances at the Euros in Germany.

Now we have further insight from the Barcelona camp on what went wrong in their relentless pursuit of the younger Williams brother.

Barcelona vice president Enric Masip, in the same podcast appearance where he alleged that PSG had made hefty €200+ million bids for Lamine Yamal, also spoke about his club’s pursuit of Nico Williams.

As per GOAL, Masip said ‘If a player who interests you doesn’t want to move, there isn’t much you can do about it.’ This is alluding to the fact that the transfer falling through is down to the player and not his club.

This is interesting because it would mean that financial factors were not the problem and that Barcelona had the means to carry the transfer out.

Given the club’s difficulties in getting Dani Olmo registered to play in La Liga this season, however, it may be necessary to take these words with a pinch of salt.
