Atlético Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has revealed his take that Valencia were denied a clear penalty during the meeting between the two sides.
Atlético made the trip to Mestalla earlier today, with sights on reclaiming their place atop the La Liga table.
When all was said and done, this is precisely what the Rojiblancos managed, Julián Alvarez having proven himself the star of the show en route to a 3-0 result.
And yet, at one point in proceedings on Saturday, Diego Simeone feels as though his side were the beneficiaries of some altogether favourable officiating.
This came after an incident involving Umar Sadiq and Javi Galán, which saw the former’s attempt on goal blocked by the hand of the Atlético defender.
The VAR team ultimately came to the conclusion that Galán’s intervention was not intentional, with his hand having been in a natural position.
Speaking to the media post-match, though, the aforementioned Simeone made clear his feelings that a spot-kick should have been awarded:
“I don’t understand Galán’s handball play. It’s very similar to Cucurella’s in the European Championships… it’s a penalty.”
