An insight into the response provided by Luka Modrić to the offer of a place on Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid coaching staff for next season has been forthcoming online.
The name of midfielder Modrić, of course, has taken its place front and centre in the headlines in Spain’s capital across the day to date.
This comes after word was forthcoming that the powers that be at Real had made one final effort to keep hold of the Croatian beyond the summer.
Modrić’s terms at the Santiago Bernabéu are due to expire upon the season’s close, with the decision understood to have been made that, at 38, he will not be offered a new deal.
Evidently, though, Florentino Pérez and co. are not ready to bid farewell to the former Ballon d’Or winner just yet.
As revealed by The Athletic’s Mario Cortegana:
‘Carlo Ancelotti has offered Luka Modric the opportunity to join his coaching staff at Real Madrid, should he decide to retire at the end of the season.’
The proposal in question is understood to have been put to Modrić two months ago.
The Athletic suggest that, initially, the veteran midfielder respectfully declined, but go on to add that inside sources point towards his response as having been far from definitive.
Diario AS, providing further context to the situation, though, have reiterated that Modrić is not yet ready to hang up his boots, and will therefore depart Madrid, at least for the time being, in the summer.
