How Barcelona’s midfield could look next season

Sergio Busquets will not be part of Barcelona’s midfield in 2023-24. That’s a given. At the time of writing, it is not known what will happen with Franck Kessié, who could leave Camp Nou over the coming months.

As reported by Mundo Deportivo, Martín Zubimendi (24) is Xavi’s preferred candidate to replace Busquets in the pivot. Joshua Kimmich has also been mentioned as a possible signing for Barça, now that the German could be ready to leave Bayern Munich. His idol is none other than Barça boss Xavi Hernández.

The transfer fee for the German could be more affordable than that of Zubimendi, a player with very different characteristics to those of Kimmich, who is at the ideal age of 28.

Manchester City captain Ilkay Gündogan is also being linked with a move to the La Liga champions, which would further strengthen Barça’s midfield. Gündogan’s experience and football intelligence would be a serious asset to Xavi going forward.

Frenkie de Jong and Pedri, who will continue to be part of Xavi’s midfield three, would benefit from playing alongside any of these three midfielders.
