Girona return to the top of La Liga table with victory over Alavés

They have won again. Girona beat Alavés 3-0 at Montilivi on Monday night to return to the top of the La Liga table.

Míchel’s men led 2-0 at the break thanks to first-half goals from Artem Dovbyk and Portu, who finished well after some good right-wing play from Yan Couto.

Dovbyk bagged his second after the break, when he rolled his penalty home to give Girona a 3-0 lead and the Catalans could have extended their lead on the night.

In the 85th minute, Alavés’ Rubén Duarte cracked an effort off the crossbar from distance as the Basque side looked for a consolation late on.

Real Madrid had returned to the top of the table briefly after their 4-1 home victory over Villarreal on Sunday night but Girona return to a position they have enjoyed this season – at the top of the La Liga standings.

Top of La Liga

Girona’s victory over Alavés sees them move onto 44 points, two ahead of Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid (42) in second place.

Barcelona are currently sitting in third place (35) after 17 games played, while Atlético Madrid are fourth (34) but have played a game less than the top three in La Liga.

Atlético take on Getafe on Tuesday night.
